About Us
Samuels Solicitors was founded in Barnstaple in 1990 and very quickly became North Devon's niche litigation practice, dealing with complex commercial claims. We have a national reputation for reputation management work, including bringing high profile claims in the High Court for libel, slander, harassment, and breach of privacy. We opened an office in Kingsbridge in 2018, and so serve clients all over the South West, as well as nationally. We opened a third office in Newcastle in 2025, to serve clients with litigation and other legal needs across the North of England.
Our litigation specialisms include negligence claims against solicitors, surveyors, financial advisors and other professionals, boundary and neighbour disputes, libel and slander claims, commercial litigation including partnership and contract disputes, disputes about wills and inheritance, and debt recovery work.
On the private client side of our business, we have an excellent reputation for drafting wills, carrying out probate, giving tax advice, establishing trusts, powers of attorney and estate planning.
We have a thriving and very busy property transaction department, dealing with residential and commercial conveyancing services, as well as the sale of agricultural land, shares and other business interests.
The firm has been awarded many different commendations over the years, including:
- annual Lexcel accreditation, the Law Society's legal practice quality mark for excellence in legal practice management and excellence in client care;
- annual membership of the Law Society's Conveyancing Quality Scheme for many years, demonstrating our commitment to excellent client care for clients buying and selling property;
- membership of the Professional Negligence Lawyer's Association; and
- the head of our private client department is a member of the Society of Trust & Estate Practitioners (STEP), open only to those who have completed higher levels of qualifications in these niche areas.
On 1 May 2018, Samuels Solicitors became a limited liability partnership, and is formally known as Samuels Solicitors LLP.
How does Samuels Solicitors deal with clients?
We have a down to earth and sympathetic approach to our clients' problems and we will always explain your options in plain English. We recognise the importance of keeping our clients informed on the progress of cases and responding quickly to our clients' needs. If you prefer to discuss your matter over the telephone, or via a video call, rather than receiving emails, we will be happy to arrange that. We are also happy to meet in person.
We appreciate that legal solutions should be cost effective. We advise clients about our fees at the outset, and keep you regularly informed as the case or transaction progresses. If you have a strong case, but limited access to funds, we will discuss your funding options with you.
When clients have a strong case, we will always consider flexible funding arrangements to ensure that you have access to justice. These can include deferred fee arrangements, payments by monthly direct debit or special fee rates, and in some cases, working with crowdfunding platforms if you have a case which is in the wider public interest.
We regularly work with insurance companies who cover clients for legal advice, typically through home insurance policies. These types of policies have various names, including "legal expenses insurance" or "family legal cover" and if you think you have this type of insurance to cover you for your legal fees, we will be able to check the policy for you and liaise with the insurer on your behalf.
If your litigation matter is suitable for a conditional fee arrangement (also known as a no win no fee agreement), we will be happy to discuss this with you at an early stage. This is a complex type of financial agreement, and is not suitable for all cases, but we are willing to consider whether your case will qualify, if you would like us to do so.
We are always happy to have a no obligation discussion about a case at the outset and in most cases, we will be able to give you a free initial assessment of your claim.
Becoming a member of staff at Samuels Solicitors
We are committed to helping our staff progress their careers, and have many employees who have started in very junior positions and have gone on to become legally qualified whilst working for us, either as solicitors or licensed conveyancers.
We are always interested in hearing from lawyers or other fee earners with specialisms that match our own and would be happy if you would like to contact us to see whether we have any positions available. We are expanding, so we would be very happy to hear from you.
